Chambered Nautilus (Nautilus pompilus)

Nautiluses are the sole living cephalopods whose bony body structure is externalized as a shell . Having survived relatively unchanged for millions of years, nautiluses are often considered "living fossils." Nautilus shell is made of many chambers perforated by a cord of body tissue. The tissue can secrete gas into the chambers to achieve neutral buoyancy. Filling out an adequate number of gas chambers nautilus regulates its immersion.
